The
Corcovado Foundation was created by members of the Drake Bay community
that felt the urgency to save the most biologically intense place
on Earth. The Corcovado Foundation, a non-profit organization, joined
the conservation effort on the Osa Peninsula becoming very actively
involved in providing direct assistance to the protection of the
rain forest in the Corcovado National Park and in the promotion
of conservation activities throughout the Peninsula. The results
have been very encouraging:
During our first years the number
of logging permits in the area were reduced from 132 to 16.
We have hired 8 new park rangers
to stop illegal hunting.
We have started educational
programs for the children of the community.
We have implemented a program to empower community
members to assist local rangers in combating illegal activity.
The
Corcovado Foundation dedicates the donations of generous environmentally
concerned people to the following objectives:
To
hire park rangers for the enforcement of laws which prohibit the
illegal downing of trees and hunting.
To
create educational programs for children and local landowners, in
order to promote alternative economic activities, such as ecotourism.
To
provide economic incentives to local landowners for forest preservation.
To
strengthen the Ministry of Environment and Energy's program to protect
the Osa Peninsula, by generating funds to pay for gasoline and other
necessary supplies.
